We have been using Socrates at our general practice for the past 2 years. Prior to this, since 1996 we had been happily using “GP Clinical” prior to the taking over of Quantum by another company.  All development of “GP Clinical” ceased and we found it necessary to seek software that would evolve and improve to meet demands of our medical practice.

 

On review of available software, Socrates seemed the most promising. Further demonstrations of the programme proved it to be versatile and straight forward in use with many added tools and features as standard. We were very committed to a high level of computer use and we are virtually paperless. We were worried about transfer of records and data to a new programme. However, our fears were groundless. Ten years worth of records, data and scanned images migrated flawlessly over a weekend. We were up and running Monday morning…. No hiccups, no gremlins, no grief.

 

Since then we have had no software problems. Support is a quick phone call away. Our hardware needs are looked after by Jones in Carlow and they are fast, efficient, and patient.

 

In all we have 6-7 doctors, 3 nurses and 6 administration/reception people all working on Socrates. Online lab results and CareDoc reporting has made life alot easier.  We are looking forward to forthcoming upgrades.

Why are we happy with Socrates? Because it does what it says on the tin!!! It converts data easily and reliably from other packages. It is stable and works away without drama in the background. It is fast and does large searches and tasks simply. When we were changing software in 2006 we looked at all options and after this process there genuinely was no contest. At the time we were promised great price deals from other companies but I always work on the theory that "The dearest thing you will ever buy is something that does not do what you expect it to do." Socrates does what we want it to do. Reports are simple, Accounts are easy and most importantly reliable. A simple thing like integration of the GMS number web check into the software was done overnight because it was a useful tool. Socrates have been extremely pro-active in bringing new developments all the time and we are really looking forward to the PCRS integrator which will revolutionise how we update our GMS lists and keep them reliable. The amount of time (and money) that this will save practices will be extremely significant. We look forward to all the other new developments that make Socrates a leader not a follower in GP software.

It is critical that our system is reliable and Socrates has given us that since 2006. We find it extremely simple to use but has huge flexibility to record what we want. Most importantly we can retrieve all information easily, even for us non technical GP's. Simple things like being able to open 4 charts at once during a consultation with several family members present and the “urgent” phone call thrown in. We can quickly create smear/blood result letters with the results automatically inserted into the letter. We can see at a glance what our active private list is. . Scanning is simple, fast and easy to view in a consultation. We are extremely happy and stress free since we moved to Socrates

My practice has been using Socrates since April 2006 and I have to say that of all the changes that I have made in 15 years of general practice this has to be easily the most advantageous. The transfer of data from my previous software provider (which I had been using for about 2 years) took 15 minutes and I have not discovered one mutation or deletion. Some of the functionality including lab results, the prescription module, waiting room module and reporting functionality are great. Interruptions to consultations are minimised by a very user friendly internal message systems which pops up on the screen and admin staff now spend much less time following up results etc in old paper charts. Finally, the responsive approach by the Socrates programmers is evident in the multiple updates. Suggestions are welcomed and worked through with many appearing in the next version.
