Socrates and Clinisys Partner to Streamline Laboratory Test Ordering for GP Practices

Socrates has announced a strategic partnership with Clinisys to deliver a smarter, fully electronic laboratory test ordering solution for GP practices across Ireland.

The new integration allows GP practices using Socrates to order blood tests and other laboratory investigations electronically via Clinisys ICE, with requests sent directly to hospital laboratories. Test results are then returned securely through existing Healthlink workflows, creating a seamless, closed-loop process from order to result.

By removing the need for paper forms and manual handling, the integration addresses long-standing inefficiencies in laboratory ordering, helping practices reduce delays, duplication, and administrative burden.

What this means for GP Practices:

With the Socrates–Clinisys integration, GP practices can now:

  • Order laboratory tests electronically within Socrates

  • Send requests directly to hospital laboratories using Clinisys ICE

  • Receive results electronically through established workflows

  • Reduce manual administration, errors, and turnaround times

Commenting on the partnership, Eileen Byrne, Managing Director at Lanas, said:

“This partnership with Clinisys embodies our vision of simplifying everyday tasks for GP practices. Our collaboration aims to remove friction from the lab ordering process, ultimately allowing practices to dedicate more time to patient care and less to administrative tasks.”

From a hospital laboratory perspective, the integration also delivers significant benefits. Structured, consistent electronic requests reduce manual data entry, ease processing bottlenecks, and support more efficient laboratory workflows.

Simon Hurst, UK and Ireland Managing Director at Clinisys, added:

“The connectivity between hospital laboratory services and GP systems such as Socrates, enabled through Clinisys ICE, marks an important step forward for both our organisations and our customers. This interoperability enhances safety and efficiency in lab test ordering and strengthens the digital connection between primary and secondary care.”

Clinisys ICE is already installed in a number of hospitals across Ireland, meaning the Socrates integration is available immediately. The partnership supports the broader shift toward more connected, secure, and interoperable digital health systems.

Socrates remains committed to helping GP practices work more efficiently and focus on what matters most — delivering high-quality patient care.
